Meaning of DPP for Sustainable Production

Meaning of DPP for Sustainable Production

Climate change and environmental degradation are an existential threat to the world and sustainable production is a must to overcome these challenges. Thanks to a growing global awareness of environmental issues, many countries and global entities started to regulate some legislations and define road maps. One of the terms showing up through these legislations is Digital Product Passport (DPP); it is a tool that presents the story of the product’s lifetime.

Green Deal’s Powerful Tool Digital Product Passport (DPP)

The European Green Deal which aims to achieve zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050 is on the European United’s agenda. For businesses exporting to Europe, understanding this legislation and its integration is essential.

As part of the European Green Deal, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) aims to reduce negative environmental impacts of products and increase functionality in the market. The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a tool designed to make meeting the requirements of ESPR easier.
DPP is a digital record of the product as a unique identifier that is physically present on the product via a data carrier such as a barcode, QR code, or some other data-capture medium. It must include some mandatory information that is specified as a part of ESPR, such as the product’s performance, substances of concern, percentage of recycled content, and expected lifetime.

The DPP is an essential tool that provides detailed information about a product’s environmental impact, materials used, energy consumption, and end-of-life considerations. In this way, consumers can make informed decisions about the product’s potential impact on the environment and can have transparency and traceability throughout the product’s entire life. Manufacturers can use it to optimize production processes, reduce waste, and comply with the EU’s environmental regulations.

Digital Product Passport (DPP) for Textile

The textile industry has long been associated with environmental concerns, from water-intensive cotton farming to energy-consuming manufacturing processes. At this point, It is important to understand the significance of Digital Product Passports (DPP) in the textile industry.

1.Transparency for Supply Chain: The DPP enables a transparent supply chain by providing a digital trail from the origin of raw materials to the final textile product. Consumers can trace the journey of their clothing, fostering a sense of trust and accountability.

2. Material Consciousness: Whether it’s organic cotton, recycled polyester, or innovative sustainable fibers, the DPP empowers consumers to make eco-friendly choices since it showcases the materials used in their textiles, including details about their environmental impact.

3. Circular Economy Integration: DPP also provides information about a product’s recyclability and end-of-life considerations, enabling the industry to embrace circular economy principles and shift away from the traditional linear model of production and consumption.

In 2024, the European Union will start to apply many applications; so DPP helps manufacturers comply with stringent environmental standards like the Green Deal.

Digital Product Passport (DPP)’s Benefits and Opportunities

DPP is an essential tool for the textile industry to become more transparent, accountable, and environmentally conscious.

1.Consumer Empowerment: Armed with information about a product’s environmental impact, consumers become powerful agents of change. The DPP empowers them to choose textiles that align with their values and contribute to a more sustainable future.

2.Innovation in Production: The DPP incentivizes manufacturers to innovate in their production processes. Whether it’s adopting eco-friendly dyeing techniques or exploring alternative materials, the textile industry can use the DPP to showcase their commitment to sustainability.

3.Global Collaboration: The adoption of Digital Product Passports opens the door for global collaboration. By establishing standardized practices and information sharing, the textile industry can work together to create a more sustainable and interconnected supply chain.

Towards The Future of Sustainable Textile

The textile industry is renowned for its vast global impact, from the cultivation of raw materials to manufacturing processes and eventual disposal.

Recognizing the need for sustainable practices, the integration of Digital Product Passport (DPP) in the textile sector seems proving to be a game-changer. Since the EU will start to put many applications into practice. So, manufacturers have to start to use these tools like DPP to comply with environmental standards. Supplied being integrated, providing transparency and eco-conscious manufacturing, DPP applications also have some challenges such as standardization, data security, and adoption. These challenges must be overcome through collaboration.

2024 is so close, especially the companies with a trading relationship with Europe will need to ask themselves for the future of sustainable textile production: “Are you ready for the future?”

Journey to the Future: Digital Twin

Before discussing the concept of digital twin, it would be useful to reflect on the history and evolution of the industry. The technological advancements of the past centuries have paved the way for the emergence of digital twins. While the adaptation to the 1st Industrial Revolution was a slow process, subsequent industrial revolutions have benefited from rapid technological developments, leading to faster industrial adaptation.

What is the Digital Twin?

The digital twin is a digital representation or similar model of a real-life object, process, or system. It replicates the physical properties, behaviors, interactions, and performance of the actual object. Digital twins are utilized to gain insights, simulate, optimize, and manage complex systems.

Application Areas For Digital Twin

The concept of a digital twin is widely used in various fields including industrial design, manufacturing, energy, health, and city planning. Digital twins are versatile tools that have great potential to improve efficiency and optimize processes in the physical world.

According to the Gartner report, the popularity of the digital twin peaked in 2018. However, in the following years, this concept has found its place in different sectors and has evolved into various forms such as ‘Digital Human’, ‘Digital Customer’, ‘Machine Learning’, and ‘Artificial Intelligence’. This indicates that the digital twin is a continuous process.

Journey to the Future of Textile Factories

In a textile factory, thousands of data are produced in a minute on even only dyeing machines. Well, How many of these do we see? The machine was at 130°C, but while it rose to 130°C, was the steam usage as it should be?
The machine took 8 tons of water, but should this amount be ok., or how long time did take for this process, or how long has it taken for an equivalent machine? To add value to a business is possible only when these questions can be answered within seconds. So, we can say the journey to the future for textile factories will be shaped by digital twin technology.

Then, let’s look at why should we quickly move to these platforms, and how can we strengthen sustainability for the industry.

  • Balance Between Sustainability and Innovation:The need for sustainability goals for a clean world makes itself felt very closely, especially in textiles. Digital twin platforms offer an effective solution by optimizing energy usage and resources, reducing costs, and utilizing data analysis and simulation capabilities. By adopting these platforms, businesses can successfully transition towards eco-friendly practices, which are essential for meeting the sustainability goals of textile customers.
  • Data-Driven Decisions and Effective Use of Human Resources: The Digital Twin provides textile finishing factories with instant access to valuable data, enabling efficient process management and informed decision-making. With its time-saving capabilities, the Digital Twin also allows employers to strategically assign employees based on their unique skills and competencies, rather than simply focusing on operational tasks.

  • Energy Efficiency and Resource Management: With the help of digital twin technology, you can quickly analyze data related to your factory including even excess steam or cooling water usage, and optimize energy consumption accordingly. This technology also enables you to monitor waste and measure your carbon and water footprints, providing opportunities for improvement and preventing unnecessary resource waste.
  • Supply Chain Management and Transparency: Reporting at every stage of the supply chain is of great importance for sustainability. By tracking the process from raw material procurement to production, Digital twin platforms promote the use of sustainable materials and provide the ability to create sustainability scores. This allows for monitoring of the entire life cycle of a product, such as a pair of trousers or a kilogram of fabric, from the cotton sourcing to the finished product.

Besides the topics mentioned earlier, the importance of digital twin technology has become crucial due to regulations and circulars. The European Green Deal, EU Border Carbon Regulation, EU Circular and Sustainable Industrial Policies, and the Circular on Cleaner Production Practices in the Textile Sector were all published based on the goal of promoting sustainable practices. And now, With the planned live waste tracking automation systems and energy-efficient systems, the need for transitioning towards an infrastructure that supports these initiatives is imperative and all requirements are targeted with specific dates and deadlines. Eliar’s Digital Factory, which is a digital twin of textile factories, has been designed and improved by these coming obligations and Eliar’s futuristic perspective.

Like all the other industry shareholders, we were also at ITMA with our 420 sqm space; and we brought together with our visitors and our new technologies, R&D projects, and also our systems that have presented solutions for our customers for years.

We joined the ITMA in 2019 in Barcelona, and naturally, many things have changed in the past 4 years. The world has come through a global crisis which named as COVID-19 pandemic; people’s attitudes and lifestyles have been changed; companies’ digital transformation has started. Thankfully ELIAR saw this coming, so our adaptation was easy. Predictably, this transformation’s effects would be observed in the long term. Therefore, ITMA 2023 was an important event and observation area for us.
ITMA’s slogan was ‘Transforming the World of Textiles’ related to its main concept; obviously, this was not a surprise for us. Since, for years, ELIAR is a company that is focusing on using resources rightly, and the importance of automation, sustainability, and digitalization, shortly transformation coming from digitalization. Preparing with our slogan ‘Future is here!’ for ITMA made felt like proof that we are moving on the right way. During the 7 days of ITMA, Thanks our visitors came from different countries of the world.
Hope to see and cooperate with you at the next events.
Future is here!
